Sophie Calle

I’ve never really done a post about my influences here, and this is a huge one. Sophie Calle is a French concept artist who works from ideas she gets from everyday life. Some of her most famous work was based around stalking a man around Venice (Suite Venitienne), ringing numbers from a found Address Book to build the idea of a person from their friends, and taking snapshots from video surveillance in a Cash Machine. The project that interests me most is Talking To Strangers (or Take Care Of Yourself) which I saw at the Whitechapel gallery a year or so back. She had filled the whole space with the individual interpretations of an email sent from her ex lover, telling her it was over. It’s such a simple idea, and everyone does this with their friends when they break up with someone, perhaps for reassurance that this person doesn’t deserve you etc. This work inspired my last project and the one I’m working on now.

anyways here’s some photographs:

Stay tuned for the next episode, where I will attempt to review some more zines! See you next time.
